1400 students, 3-19 yrs

The Vienna International School was established in September 1978, having developed from the 'English School' of Vienna. The school is highly international in its outlook, staff and curriculum. Its campus is situated near the United Nations Headquarters at the Vienna International Centre.

Its student body represents 97 countries, with over half the students having parents working in the UN or who belong to the Diplomatic Community. Other parents represent the international business community and local Austrian community.

The Vienna International School 's facilities include a cafeteria, libraries, areas for music and art, seven science laboratories, three computer labs, five indoor gymnasia, track and playing fields, an indoor and outdoor theatre, and an ecology area.

The Vienna International School offers the IB Diploma and IB PYP, and is developing its own Grade 6 - 10 international programme that addresses the needs of students and adequately prepares them for entry into the IB Diploma. In all subjects, where appropriate, information technology is integrated, both at the Primary and Secondary levels.

The language of instruction is English and there is an ESL programme providing both in-class support and intensive tuition. Most Primary School students are encouraged to learn German once they become proficient in English; all Secondary school students are required to learn German. Students are encouraged to continue studies in their mother tongue. Many students pursue their mother tongue as part of their Diploma programme.

A dynamic Pre-Primary School offers an inquiry based programme, developmentally appropriate for three, four and rising five year old children.

In the Primary School, classroom practice utilizes whole class, group and individual instruction according to the subject matter in hand and the needs of the students. Specialist subjects offered include ESL, German, ICT, library, music, PE and SEN.

Within the Secondary School at Vienna International School , the following subjects are followed: English, German, mathematics, science, humanities, PE, a creative subject and the opportunity to study French or Spanish. In the final two years the students prepare for the IB Diploma. Equivalence to Austrian Matura is also available within the IB Programme.
