The American School of Yaounde is an independent co-educational school which offers an educational program from pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade for English-speaking students of all nationalities. The school was founded in 1964. The school year is comprised of four terms extending from late August to early November; early November to late January; early February to mid-April; and early April to mid-June.

The school is governed by an eight-member Board of Directors elected for two-year terms by the School Association. Half of the Board members are elected at each annual meeting. Membership of the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school. The US Ambassador appoints a representative to the Board.

The curriculum is that of traditional US public schools with the use of modern materials, a well-equipped information technology lab, and a comprehensive library/media center. All instruction is in English, with French being taught as a foreign language. English as a Second Language (ESL) programs are offered to non-English speakers who wish to have an American-type education. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and by CIS. AP exams are offered in grades 11 and 12.

There are 26 full-time and six part-time faculty members, including 15 US citizens and seven host country nationals, and ten third country nationals. All staff members are holders of bachelor's or master's degrees from their own country and most are fully certified and registered with their respective country's educational department. Of the total enrollment for the 2002/3 school year, 24.35% are US citizens, 18% are Cameroonian, and 57.65% are children from 27 other nationalities.

The school has a main campus with twenty classrooms, two computer labs, a library for student use with separate primary and upper grade sections. The school's recreation center includes a swimming pool, a covered volleyball/basketball court, four tennis courts and a snack bar/restaurant. The playground provides an area for the smaller children and an abbreviated soccer field.
