Hong Kong Academy (HKA) is an independent,
non-profit, coeducational day school. Its mission it to provide
an outstanding international education for children in the Hong
Kong SAR by developing and nurturing intellectually curious, critically
thinking, ethically-minded, self-assured students who achieve their
full potential as individuals and as responsible members of the
global community. The school was launched in September 2000. In
academic year 2005/06 its enrollment will consist of students from
age 3 to grade 6. The remaining primary grades will be added in
subsequent years.
The hallmarks of Hong Kong Academy (HKA) are a truly international,
inquiry-based curriculum; small class sizes with high teacher-to-student
ratios, special emphasis on Chinese culture and language; integration
of information technology into all aspects of the curriculum and
school life; and community service. Rather than teach a single overseas
curriculum, the school aims to provide an education that emphasizes
both local and global perspectives and takes advantage of the rich
cultural heritage of China and the diverse backgrounds of the student
community. The school is an authorized IB Primary Years Programme
school. The language of instruction is English, but the school features
a progressive Chinese as a Second Language program that is fully
integrated with the rest of the curriculum and that emphasizes immersion
and experiential learning.
Hong Kong Academy (HKA) is committed to recruiting non-native English
speakers and other students across the spectrum of educational abilities
and needs, to the extent of its capabilities and resources. A scholarship
fund is intended to provide access to families that otherwise would
not afford an international school education. The school's facilities
and extra-curricular programs are open to the community at large.
The Hong Kong Academy (HKA) is housed in a former secondary school
building centrally located on Hong Kong Island. Classrooms are bright
and spacious, and there are outdoor courts for recreation. To foster
parental involvement and continuing education, the facility includes
a large 'Community Room' with comfortable furnishings, work stations
and a toddler play area.
The admissions process at Hong Kong Academy (HKA) seeks to identify
families that subscribe to the school's philosophy, and students
who will benefit from the educational program and contribute to
the school's goals. In addition to an application, the school requires
previous school transcripts, a health and immunization report, and
a pre-admission assessment.
