The Yew Chung International Primary and Secondary
Schools are part of the Yew Chung Education Foundation, a non-profit Christian
organisation. The Foundation has operated in Hong Kong for over seventy
years, and now has a network of schools in Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing
and the United States.
Over the years, Yew Chung schools have developed a distinctive philosophy,
which has led to innovative educational goals and a modern, outward looking
curriculum.
The schools offer a clearly structured curriculum from Reception/Year
1 to Secondary Year 13 (5 years to 16+ years), based on the English National
Curriculum. It is adapted to suit an international city and a mobile population
such as in Hong Kong.
Yew Chung International Schools are bilingual where all students learn
both English and Chinese. To support bilingual education, the school provides
educational experts in both ESL (English as a Second Language) and CSL
(Chinese as a Second Language) who assist the classroom teachers as well
as individual students requiring more intensive language learning. The
Research Division has pioneered innovative methods in teaching Chinese
(Putonghua and Cantonese).
The schools integrate Eastern and Western teaching methods. Western teachers
are qualified and experienced, and are recruited from Australia, New Zealand,
UK, Canada and the United States. Chinese teachers come from Hong Kong,
Taiwan, and mainland China. The school accepts students of all races and
religions who can benefit from the curriculum, and sets entrance tests
in English, maths and Chinese with oral interviews. A low student/teacher
ratio and a network of services are provided to support Yew Chung's educational
aims. The Religious and Moral Education Division staff provide a range
of counselling services, voluntary activities, and maintain a School Farm
in Fanling. An Arts School provides specialized classes in traditional
music, instruments, voice, dance, art, performance and modern computer
music. A range of after school clubs gives students a chance to explore
their various interests.
An Extended Services Program offers a full range of after school academic
and recreational activities for students whose parents are both working.
The Yew Chung Language Center offers an Intensive English Programme which
accepts students from Year 5 to Year 9 who require more intensive learning
in English before making the transition into a bilingual international
school.
The school encourages parents' active participation in their children's
education, and maintains regular contact through newsletters, parent/teacher
interviews and other events.
