The International Preparatory School is a private English medium primary school situated at Mapou, in the northern part of Mauritius. It was founded in 1989 to meet the needs of the many English-speaking expatriates and Mauritians living in this rapidly developing region. The school is governed by a Board of Governors who are elected from the parent body. A management team ensures that the school buildings and their environs are well maintained at all times. All instruction is in English, with French being taught as a subject as from year 1. IPS offers a curriculum largely based on the British national curriculum adapted to the location of Mauritius and the diversity of the student body. The school is well equipped, and facilities include a multi-purpose science/art/technology lab, an air conditioned computer room an air conditioned library, sports fields and a small amphitheatre. The school has a multi- cultural multi -national dedicated and caring staff. Most of whom are well qualified and experienced and are kept up to date the latest developments in education by means of workshops, distance learning, seminars, and training courses. The school has an active PA (Parents Association) who assist with extra curricular activities, fund raising and run the school uniform and stationery shop. The school has been able to purchase adjoining land and is now in the process of expansion to enable it to accommodate the high demand for places and to offer more facilities for all. Admission for pupils coming from abroad is based on the previous school records and a personal interview where possible. For local admissions students must enter at nursery level. Criteria for entrance includes, and also depends on, the school's capacity to meet the child's educational needs. The school years runs form September to the first week in July. There are four weeks of holiday at Christmas, two weeks at the end of the second term and seven weeks in July/August. School hours are from 08:00 14:50 for KS 1 & 2 and 08:30 to 12:00 for the Nursery and 08:30 to 14:30 for the Reception class. Wednesday school closes for classes at 12:10
