British International School, Victoria Island

The British International School, Victoria Island, in Lagos is a multi-national co-educational English medium, English curriculum school, catering for pupils from Year 7 to Year 13 leading to Cambridge IGCSE, 'A/S' and 'A2' level examinations. The subject policies contain the National Curriculum for England requirements with slight modifications to reflect the international setting. Support teachers are available to help those pupils whose level of English is below average.

The school opened in September 2001 and the expected enrolment is 250 by September 2004.

The school is situated within a walled 30-acre site in a suburb of Lagos but is fortunate to be housed near to the coast and in the middle of a new housing and mixed development complex.

The school is the most modern in Lagos, with excellent facilities which will include, eventually, a multi-purpose hall, theatre, music suites, computer suites, science suites, tutorial rooms, gymnasium, swimming pool, running track, full size football field etc. etc.

Seventy-five percent of the teaching staff are British qualified and experienced.

BIS, VI is committed to providing extra curricular activities for pupils, which include all the usual sports, musical and drama activities plus such activities as chess, karate, aerobics, textiles etc.

Large-scale musical and drama productions will be mounted annually. Sporting fixtures and exchanges are encouraged.

Entrance procedures for September 2002 (and beyond) are as follows: A school Introductory Profile, and other details, can be obtained from the school office. The Admissions Procedure Form costs 5,000 Naira and entitles the person purchasing the form to nominate their child to sit the Entrance Examination for the academic year of their choice. Parents purchasing this form are placed on a waiting list and the first 60 students in each year group in each academic year are guaranteed a place in the day School, should their child(ren) subsequently pass the entrance examination. This is normally taken in the March of the year preceding entry to the school (e.g. March 2002 for September 2002 entry). Numbers for boarding are much more strictly limited and parents requiring boarding are encouraged to apply especially early
